Q&A

Do you employ any food handlers?

Food handlers assessment

Do you have people working for you handling food? Are you aware of the risks to your organisation of food handlers passing infections onto your customers? Do you have measures in place for checking your employees are fit to handle and prepare food safely? If a food handler has an enteric infection (in other words, an infection that could be spread by someone eating or drinking contaminated food), they could potentially pass that infection onto your customers. A single food handler with a disease that can be spread in this way, such as salmonella, could result in an infection outbreak. Routine health screening or testing of food handlers may not prevent these kind of outbreaks completely. However, it is worth getting specialist occupational health advice if you have a food handler with a long-term condition that could result in food contamination, or if you, or any of your employees, are concerned about certain health symptoms.
